What are medical electives?

The purpose of medical electives is to introduce you to the practical world of medicine. Also called clinical experiences, they give you a chance to go one step beyond your normal medical education.

What do we mean? You will have the opportunity to gain first-hand medical experience by observing and participating in a wide range of cases and earn letters of recommendation from U.S. physicians. Put simply, you can pick the destination and the department you'd like to participate in. It's fully customisable to your preferences.

Depending on your field of study, you can participate in medicine, dentistry, or nursing electives. You can select from hands-on or observership electives. Hands-on clinical experiences allow you to perform several duties, including taking patient histories and vitals or presenting cases and differential diagnoses.

Observerships include shadowing the precepting physicians during the preceptor’s daily medical practice.

These clinical experiences normally last between 4 and 12 weeks. It’s entirely up to you to decide where and when to sign up for clinical placements. Many students usually choose this opportunity to go and practice what they’ve learned in med school in hospitals abroad. They then use this experience to further their career in their home country or to apply to the U.S. residency Match.
