What are medical electives?
The purpose of medical electives is to introduce you to the practical world of medicine. Also called clinical experiences, they give you a chance to go one step beyond your normal medical education.
What do we mean? You will have the opportunity to gain first-hand medical experience by observing and participating in a wide range of cases and earn letters of recommendation from U.S. physicians. Put simply, you can pick the destination and the department you'd like to participate in. It's fully customisable to your preferences.
Depending on your field of study, you can participate in medicine, dentistry, or nursing electives. You can select from hands-on or observership electives. Hands-on clinical experiences allow you to perform several duties, including taking patient histories and vitals or presenting cases and differential diagnoses.
Observerships include shadowing the precepting physicians during the preceptor’s daily medical practice.
These clinical experiences normally last between 4 and 12 weeks. It’s entirely up to you to decide where and when to sign up for clinical placements. Many students usually choose this opportunity to go and practice what they’ve learned in med school in hospitals abroad. They then use this experience to further their career in their home country or to apply to the U.S. residency Match.
Apart from giving you the essential experience and confidence in your field of study, medical electives will also help you build an unrivalled portfolio. You will receive credit for your work through recommendation letters from medical practitioners and hospitals.
Medical Electives in the USA
US medical electives are popular among students who wish to go abroad. The programmes that the USA offers are flexible and diverse. What does that mean?
Medlink Students can help you choose from over 200 hospitals and clinics in over 70 specialities. We have recently partnered up with the largest clinical experience platform in the USA and the world.
As far as flexibility is concerned, clinical experience programmes start every month. You must choose a medical placement and reserve your spot before someone else takes it.
Medical Electives Online (Telehealth, Telemedicine)
COVID-19 drastically increased the popularity of telemedicine. This increase provided a unique opportunity for clinical electives: virtual rotations.
But what exactly is telemedicine?
Telehealth, commonly referred to as “telemedicine”, is defined as electronic communications and software used to monitor and treat patients without physical contact. While this technology is not new, hospitals and clinics have incorporated it to help students with their clinical rotations.
Put simply, you can now do virtual medical electives with US doctors in US hospitals from the comfort of your home. Some are even offered as flexible, which means you can rotate your schedule.
These online electives are officially recognised by medical universities such as Dnipro Medical Institute.
